World Sports Journalists Day observed in Pakistan with enthusiasm

PESHAWAR, July 2 : International Sports Journalists' Day was celebrated all over Pakistan with enthusiasm .Celebrations were held in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar. The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Also issued the message. Federal Minister for Information Farrukh Habib and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Shahbaz Gil also graced the occasion. Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan termed sports journalists’ role vital in highlighting the country's softer image to the world community. In his message the Chief Minister on the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day said the purpose of celebrating this day is to recognize the role of journalists in the promotion of sports in the country in general and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular.Sports journalists have a key in promoting sports, the Chief Minister Mahmood Khan said in his audio and video messages on the occasion of the day celebrated by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Writers Association with the support of Pakistan Sports Writers Federation and Directorate General Sports KP here at Qayyum Stadium on Friday.

The Chief Minister Mahmood Khan said, sports Journalists have rendered valuable service in highlighting the soft image of the country abroad and promoting sports activities. He said sports journalists have also helped encourage the players and resolve the problems facing them.The Chief Minister KP expressed the hope that sports journalists would work for sports promotion at national and international levels in a more effective manner.The provincial government will take all possible steps for the welfare of journalists associated with the sports sector, Mahmood Khan said.

Director General Sports KP Province Asfandyar Khattak at the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day celebrations said that the government of KP, PSWF and Sports Writers Association, KP will jointly convene a national sports conference in August this year.President PSW Amjad Aziz Malik, former MPA Dr Zakir Shah, President SWA, KP Ijaz Ahmad Khan and Administrative Officer Sports Jaffer Shah along with members of SWA, KP attended the day’s celebrations.

Secretary Asian Sports Journalists Federation Amjad Aziz Malik said sports journalists in Pakistan have to play a constructive role in highlighting the healthy activities. Celebrations in connection with International Sports Journalists' Day being organized in Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta, Karachi, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan on July 2.


In Islamabad : Serena Hotels in collaboration with Rawalpindi-Islamabad Sports Journalists Association held a reception to honor sports journalists on World Sports Journalists Day, as part of Serena Hotels Sports Diplomacy Initiative.

The prominent journalists of print and electronic media from the twin cities were invited to an exclusive get together at Islamabad Serena Hotel, followed by a cake cutting ceremony. Farrukh Habib, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting along with Shahbaz Gill, Special Assistant to the PM were the Chief Guests on the occasion .State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib said that the government was contemplating launching countrywide sports activities to encourage youngsters to participate in healthy sports activities.

Speaking at the occasion, he said relevant ministries in consultation with provinces were working on the plan to launch sports activities.

He said the sports coverage in newspapers and TV channels should be increased, enabling the sports journalists to get their due share in the air-time of the channel. The world admires Prime Minister Imran Khan as a top legend of the world of sports and the country’s youth idealized the PM as an ideal personality of the youth.

In Karachi The Sports Journalists Association of Sindh (SJAS) has held the “Hockey reporting workshop” to mark the Sports Journalists Day, at the Karachi Hockey Academy (KHA).

Addressing the occasion, former Hockey captain Hanif Khan said that a player or organiser could not dodge a journalist with proper homework. He acknowledged that a sports journalist play a major role an athlete’s growth. Hanif Khan paid tribute to SJAS for organising the event on national sports on such important day.


Former Captain of the national junior team and member of the national teams in Athens and Sydney Olympics and World Cup 2002, Kashif Jawwad imparted knowledge of five-a-side format to journalists. He said that in the past lack of knowledge, about regulations, has cost Pakistan. This format, of two halves of 10-minute each, is getting popularity worldwide and the Pakistan Hockey Federation is also working on a roadmap for this format’s promotion. The coordinator of the PHF and the Secretary General of the KHA, Haider Hussain gave credit to SJAS for the betterment of KHA. He hoped that this bond will go for strength to strength.

International Hockey commentator Riazuddin, senior sports journalists Rashid Aziz, Syed Nasar Iqbal, Mehmood Riaz, Maqsood Ahmed, Nadira Mushtaq and Jaffar Hussain also imparted their knowledge about reporting and news packaging. The workshop was attended by large numbers of SJAS members.SJAS President Muhammad Asif Khan, while expressing his views, said that knowledge of laws further enhance the reporting standard. 


The Secretary General of SJAS, Muhammad Asghar Azeem said that since inception SJAS has been fulfilling its role of imparting knowledge. He further said that the world body, AIPS, which came into being in 1924, announced 2nd July as the world sports journalists day in 1994, therefore, on the directives of Pakistan Sports Writers Federation, this day is being observed.

In the end, secretary Sindh Olympic Association, Ahmed Ali Rajput and Olympian Kashif Jawwad distributed certificates among the participants.Senior Vice President, Pakistan Sports Writers Federation, Syed Nasar Iqbal and Senior Vice President, SJAS Zubair Nazeer Khan presented shields to Olympian Kashif Jawwad and secretary KHA Haider Hussain.
