Berkeley police officers helped catch suspects in a carjacked vehicle who were fleeing from Richmond police on Thursday afternoon, authorities report.

Berkeley officers assisted in the investigation when the Richmond police chase crossed into Berkeley, authorities said.

The incident began in Richmond shortly after 4 p.m. when officers spotted a speeding motorist driving recklessly near Cutting and Carlson boulevards, the Richmond Police Department said.

When Richmond officers caught up to the vehicle and checked its license plate, they found that it had been taken during a carjacking, authorities said.

Richmond police then began to chase the carjacked vehicle with assistance from a CHP helicopter, authorities said.

Berkeley residents alerted The Scanner when the chase ended up in Berkeley: "BPD flying down Adeline Street towards Oakland and a helicopter circling overhead. Looks like something just past the here/there signs," one person said.

Two people jumped out of the car in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 55th Street in North Oakland right as Berkeley police were arriving, authorities said.

Officers ultimately detained both people, including one who ran into a gas station and tried to hide, authorities said.

At least one person has now been arrested, according to preliminary information.

No other details were available as of publication time.
