Police are looking into the discovery of a deceased person whose body was found beneath a freeway underpass in Berkeley on Friday, authorities report.

Limited information was available Sunday due to the ongoing investigation. The Alameda County coroner's office said there is a press hold on the case.

The Berkeley Police Department said the report originally came into the dispatch center from the California Highway Patrol on Friday around 3:45 p.m.

Someone had reported seeing what appeared to be a body on the shoulder of the roadway, BPD said.

Authorities dispatched Berkeley police officers along with the Berkeley Fire Department as a precaution.

BFD located the individual and pronounced them dead at the scene, BPD said, beneath the underpass near the I-80 East off-ramp at University Avenue.

BPD and the CHP also responded to the area. BPD is now in charge of the investigation.

Authorities notified the coroner's office, which is working to identify the deceased individual.

Police said they could not comment on any specifics about the condition of the body or what may have happened.

"You don't know until you finish the investigation," said BPD Lt. Rob Rittenhouse.

Homicide investigators have been notified, but the death did not immediately appear suspicious.

"We're looking to figure out what happened, but there's no search for a suspect who's out on the loose at this point," Rittenhouse said.
